Kinship Care is the full-time care and nurturing of a child by grandparents or another relative or someone who has a significant emotional relationship with the child. Whether a family is dealing with physical or mental illness, child abuse, incarceration, substance abuse, military deployment or death, there are times when grandparents or other extended family members need to step in to care for a child.
There are two-types of kinship care:
Informal Care is when family members become caregivers for related children without the involvement of the court or social services.
Formal Care is when arrangements are made by the court with the assistance of social services.
